Hotel Linen Storage: Commercial Wire Shelving Guide

Most hotel linen rooms do not need a complicated storage system. They need shelving that fits the folded linen, leaves enough room for a housekeeping cart, and holds up to the room's moisture level.

For a dry, air-conditioned linen closet, chrome wire shelving is usually the practical choice. If the room sits beside the laundry and stays humid, use epoxy-coated or stainless instead. That finish decision matters more than almost anything else on this page, so start there.

Which finish should your linen room use?

Chrome is typically the lower-cost choice for dry storage. That does not make it the right finish for a humid linen room. Our chrome collection states it plainly: chrome wire shelving is suitable for dry storage environments, and for walk-in coolers, dishrooms, or humid areas you should choose epoxy or stainless instead. Moisture exposure can cause chrome finishes to break down over time.

So the question is not chrome or not. It is what the room actually does. A linen closet on a guest floor with its own air conditioning is dry storage. If the room stays humid, regularly sees moisture, or shares untreated air with the laundry, choose epoxy coated or stainless instead. Laundry itself is a hard environment for metal: constant humidity, chemicals, and heat.

One thing shelving cannot do: fix a ventilation problem. Open wire lets air move around stacked linen instead of trapping it against a solid deck, but damp linen in a poorly ventilated room stays damp. Fix the room first.

Measure before you order

Start by recording four measurements. None of them are on a spec sheet, so you have to walk the room:

• Usable wall width after doors, light switches, and sprinkler clearance.
• Doorway and cart clearance. Housekeeping works out of a cart, so measure the cart and the door it comes through before you pick a shelf depth.
• Depth of your folded linen. Fold a bath towel and a flat sheet the way your staff actually folds them and measure the stack. That number, not the catalog, sets your shelf depth.
• Your largest item, usually a comforter or duvet, which sets the tallest shelf opening you need.

On depth: 12" and 14" are the narrow options and are what fit a housekeeping closet a cart still has to pass through. Deeper units suit bulk linen rooms and banquet storage, where nobody is squeezing past them.

How many shelves do you need?

Shelf count follows from par levels, which vary by property. Count the linen you keep in rotation, split it into the categories your staff actually pulls, and give each category its own shelf position rather than mixing them.

As a worked example, a 60" wide unit might dedicate one shelf each to fitted sheets, flat sheets, pillowcases, and bath towels. Put whatever housekeeping pulls most often between waist and shoulder height, keep lightweight bulk like comforters up top, and use the lowest shelf for less frequently needed overflow, with all linen properly shelved and off the floor. Adjustable shelves are what make that possible: the same unit re-pitches as your mix changes.

Stationary or mobile?

This is a real decision, not an upsell. Stationary units are the default for a linen room. For the same footprint they cost noticeably less, they are offered with 4 or 5 shelves where mobile units generally come with 4, and nothing shifts under load.

Mobile units typically ship with four casters, two of them braked, and earn their place in narrower cases:

• Rolling a unit out to clean behind it.
• Moving stock closer to where a cart gets loaded.
• Repositioning within a room as the mix changes.
• Temporary overflow during events, renovations, or a seasonal peak.

A mobile shelving unit is not a housekeeping transport cart, and it is not meant to be run fully loaded across the property or between floors. Load limits differ for mobile use, so confirm the rating for how you actually plan to load it before you spec casters.

Chrome units come with 4 or 5 adjustable shelves, 4 posts, shelf clips, and 4 leveling feet, in heights of 54", 63", 74", and 86". Published capacity is 600 to 800 lb per shelf depending on size and shelf type.
