ESD Safe Shelf Bins for Electronics Workstations

ESD safe shelf bins sit on the workbench or wire shelf at every electronics workstation that handles sensitive components. The open-front hopper design gives technicians fast, one-handed access to small parts like ICs, resistors, connectors, fasteners, and sub-assemblies — no lids to open, no containers to unstack, no reason to break ESD discipline in the middle of a job. Every bin in this collection is molded from carbon-filled copolymer polypropylene with a surface resistivity of less than 106 ohms per square, so charges dissipate safely instead of building up during normal handling.

How They're Different from Standard Shelf Bins

Physically, these are the same QSB series shelf bins used in every warehouse and manufacturing operation in North America — same hopper opening, same label slot, same stacking geometry. The difference is the material. Standard QSB shelf bins are insulative polypropylene that can hold thousands of volts of static after a single pass of a technician's sleeve. Our ESD version is permanently static dissipative throughout the body of the container, not a surface coating, so it cannot wear off or be neutralized by cleaning solvents. If a bin will ever hold a printed circuit board, an ESD-sensitive IC, or any component with an HBM rating under 2,000 volts, the ESD safe version is the specification that belongs on the purchase order.

Sizes and Configuration Options

The ESD shelf bins product line is available in 13 sizes, from small parts bins for individual ICs and passives up to large hopper totes for sub-assemblies and populated boards. Every bin accepts optional width dividers (7 slots per bin) for subdividing compartments as your part mix changes, and label holders are available for every size to keep part identification at the point of use. The bins sit on standard wire shelving, workbench rails, louvered panels, and cart systems — no proprietary hardware required.

Typical Use Cases in Electronics Manufacturing

  • Workstation parts picking — ICs, connectors, passives, and fasteners at the assembler's fingertips
  • Rework and repair benches — component staging during board-level repair
  • Kitting stations — organizing BOM line items by assembly run
  • Test and inspection — holding boards awaiting disposition without mixing serials
  • High-mix low-volume production — dozens of part numbers at a single station with fast open-front access

  • All prices include free shipping, and we offer bulk pricing for large volume orders. Need help speccing sizes for a new workstation buildout or matching bins to existing wire shelving? Contact us with your shelf dimensions and we'll put together a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions About ESD Shelf Bins

What's the difference between ESD safe shelf bins and standard QSB shelf bins? +

The physical dimensions, hopper opening, label slot, and stacking geometry are identical. The only difference is the material. Standard QSB shelf bins are made from insulative polypropylene that holds a static charge and can generate thousands of volts of ESD during normal handling. ESD safe shelf bins are molded from carbon-filled copolymer polypropylene with a surface resistivity of less than 106 ohms per square, which safely dissipates static charges. The protection is permanent and built into the material, it does not wash off or wear out. Any component with an HBM ESD rating under 2,000 volts, which includes most modern ICs, CMOS devices, and populated PCBs, should be stored in the ESD safe version.

What surface resistivity do ESD safe shelf bins have? +

Our ESD safe shelf bins have a surface resistivity of less than 106 ohms per square. This places them in the static dissipative range as defined by ANSI/ESD S20.20, the standard specification for ESD storage containers used inside an ESD Protected Area. Dissipative materials bleed static charges to ground gradually and safely, unlike conductive materials that can cause a sudden discharge or insulative materials that hold charge indefinitely.

What sizes are available and can I add dividers? +

We stock esd-safe shelf bins in 13 sizes, from small parts bins suitable for individual ICs and passives up to large hopper totes for sub-assemblies. Every bin accepts optional width dividers with 7 slot positions, so a single bin can hold one part number or up to eight subdivided compartments. Dividers snap in and out without tools and can be reconfigured as your part mix changes. Label holders are available for every size.

Do ESD safe shelf bins need to be grounded? +

Yes. A dissipative shelf bin only protects components when it's connected to a common ground through grounded shelving or a bonded workbench surface. Placing an ESD bin on ungrounded painted-steel shelving provides almost no ESD protection, because the bin has nowhere to send the charge it's dissipating. ANSI/ESD S20.20 requires that all conductive and dissipative surfaces inside the Protected Area share a common point ground. For retrofits, ground kits that bond standard wire shelving to a common ground are inexpensive and take about fifteen minutes per unit to install.
